José J. Santiago-Meléndez is an Of Counsel in the Labor and Employment Division of Fiddler, González & Rodríguez, P.S.C. He also chairs the Labor & Employment Division and is a member of the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors of Fiddler.
Mr. Santiago practices in the area of labor and employment counseling. He regularly advises clients on possible liability for employment-related claims and lawsuits. His counseling practice also includes general labor litigation, including wage and hour claims, workmen’s compensation, labor arbitration and discrimination cases. Mr. Santiago also advises employers on a wide variety of employment policies and practices, specially workmen’s compensation insurance, reductions in force and employment termination.
He has successfully defended numerous cases at both trial and appellate levels. Among his reported cases are: Vega v. Yiyi Motors Corp., 146 DPR 373 (1998) (wage and hour) and Santiago v. Kodak Caribbean, LTD, 129 DPR 763 (1992) (workmen’s compensation and wrongful discharge).
Mr. Santiago has served as speaker in numerous seminars on Labor and Employment Law to the Puerto Rico Manufacturers Association, the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce and the Labor Law Conference, sponsored by the Inter American University of Puerto Rico School of Law, as well as for many clients of Fiddler. Mr. Santiago has written law review articles on workmen’s compensation that have been quoted by the Puerto Rico Supreme Court.
