Ricardo L. Ortiz Colón is the Managing Director of Fiddler, González & Rodríguez, P.S.C. and Chair of its Executive Committee and Board of Directors. He is a Shareholder in Fiddler’s Litigation Division and heads the Product Liability and Telecommunications Practice Groups.
Mr. Ortiz practices in the areas of telecommunications, product liability, aviation, intellectual property, environmental and contract litigation cases. His experience extends to counseling and representing telecommunications companies in federal and state litigation and rulemaking proceedings covering a wide range of issues related to the Puerto Rico Telecommunications Act of 1996 and the Federal Telecommunications Act of 1996. He handles complex civil litigation before the courts of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Also, he frequently handles appellate matters before the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico.
Mr. Ortiz has actively participated in the following representative cases: Vázquez-Filippetti v. Banco Popular de P.R., 504 F.3d 43 (1st Cir. 2007); In Re: Advanced Cellular Systems, Inc., 483 F.3d 7 (1st Cir. 2007); Carlos A. Romero, Jr. v. Colegio de Abogados de Puerto Rico and Harry Anduze, 204 F.3d 291 (1st Cir. 2000); Gierbolini-Rosa v. Banco Popular de Puerto Rico, 121 F.3d 695 (1st Cir. 1997); Silva v. American Airlines, Inc., 960 F. Supp. 528 (D.P.R. 1997); Pritzker v. Yari, 42 F.3d 53 (1st Cir. 1994).
Mr. Ortiz has served as a member of the Puerto Rico Supreme Court’s Board of Bar Examiners since 1998. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Community Legal Legal Office, Inc., an entity that provides pro bono legal services and that serves as the Legal Aid Clinic for the Interamerican University School of Law.
As a member of the Puerto Rico Bar Association, Mr. Ortiz served as President of the Special Commission for the Study of the Jury Institution in Puerto Rico. He also served as a member of the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association and was a Liaison for the Defense Research Institute at the 2001 Second International Conference, The Globalization of Product Liability, held in Brussels, Belgium. Mr. Ortiz currently serves as a Member of the Board of Directors of the Federal Bar Association’s Hon. Raymond L. Acosta Puerto Rico Chapter .
Before joining Fiddler Mr. Ortiz served as a law clerk for Justice Miriam Naveira de Rodón, then Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico.
